Bioinformatician for translational metabolic diagnostics
We are looking for a bioinformatician who will develop and implement automated analysis pipelines for existing and novel diagnostic tests within the Translational Metabolic Laboratory.

The Department of Human Genetics is one of the largest and most innovative human genetics departments in Europe. We currently employ more than 400 people, who work in three divisions, Genome Research, Genome Diagnostics, and Clinical Genetics. The Genome Diagnostics division is one of the largest laboratories with >150 employees who work under the umbrella of different theme groups.
You will be embedded in a young team of bioinformaticians and programmers responsible for the development of novel technologies for patient diagnostics and translational research. In this role you will be working in close collaboration with the Translational Metabolic Laboratory (TML) to improve the diagnosis of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEMs). Within TML, we are innovating our diagnostic processes by implementing holistic approaches like metabolomics, proteomics and glycomics, including the development of new computational approaches to process and interpret untargeted high resolution mass spectrometry data. Challenges lie in the translation of big data to a clinically valuable results for individual patients. Together, we are one of the leading diagnostic laboratories in Europe due to the high degree of innovation and rapid uptake of novel technologies.
De functie / The role
You will establish, maintain and further optimize data analysis pipelines for metabolomics and glyco-proteomics data from sample to final (diagnostic) report. This includes workflow automation, integration with the Laboratory Information Management system and reference database development. You will work in a challenging environment, characterized by inter-disciplinary research and innovation, high dynamics, and a patient-oriented drive.
The work is performed together with laboratory specialists, laboratory technicians and a senior bio-informatician. In addition, you will work in close collaboration with bioinformaticians from the department of Human Genetics and laboratory information management system administrators.
Het profiel / Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated bioinformatician with the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment at the cutting edge of science. Further:
You have a master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Software engineering, Bioinformatics or equivalent.
Strong computer programming skills, experienced with software development, preferably in Java.
Experience with Linux and preferably with high performance computing systems.
Preferably you have prior experience with proteomics/metabolomics.
You’re a team player with good communicational skills, pro-active and eager to learn new things and develop yourself.
